Hellmouth is redefining the theatrical experience blending cutting-edge technology, vivid physicality, and daring creativity to create productions that challenge and inspire.

We’re an emerging artistic collective interested in exploring the intersections of hyperreal technology, physical acting, absurdism, and experimental theatre. Hellmouth was founded by playwrights Lee Bowser and Jacksyn Ivy Jayne, current students at New York University studying drama in the Experimental Theatre Wing as a vessel to produce their independent work as well as to uplift the work of playwrights that may be overlooked in traditional settings.

Simply put, we have become disillusioned with the state of modern commercial theatre, the watering down of artistic intent in the name of profit. In that nature, this company itself is an experiment. We refuse to make ourselves or our art lose purpose in the name of broad commercial appeal. At the same time, while we aim to make our audiences feel uncomfortable, we never want our patrons to feel unsafe. Hellmouth is and always will be, by design, radically inclusive and for all artists that lead with bravery, kindness, fun, and a healthy disrespect for the rules.

What is a Hellmouth?

A Hellmouth is a medieval depiction of the entrance to hell, often consisting of a large, toothy jaw belonging to some kind of beast. In theatre history, real-life Hellmouths were made in the form of large mechanical devices that would terrify audiences, often emitting fireworks and smoke. Actors dressed as imps and demons would emerge from its jowls and drag audience members inside. It has long been Lee’s dream to make such a contraption, but for now, they will settle for naming their company after it.
